대한민국의 최남단에 있는 섬, 마라도에 다녀왔다. 제주도에서 남쪽으로 약 11km 정도 떨어져 있고, 대한민국의 극남에 위치한 섬이기 때문에 연평균 기온 및 최한월 평균기온이 가장 높다. 남서쪽에 이어도가 존재하나, 이어도는 국제법상으로도, 한중 양국 정부 입장으로도 섬이 아닌 암초이므로 마라도가 가장 남쪽에 있는 섬이라고 한다. 마라도는 면적이 작은 섬인 데다가 위치도 육지로부터 너무 멀리 떨어져 있는 변방이기 때문에 역사적으로 마라도는 별반 가치는 없는 섬이었다고 한다. 역사에서 마라도가 처음 등장한 건 1883년에 모슬포에 거주하던 일부 농민들이 제주 목사의 허락하에 마라도에 화전농지를 개간했다는 기록이며, 원래는 숲이 울창했는데 개척으로 모조리 사라져버려서 지금의 탁 트인 섬이 되어버렸는데, 그래도 마라도 및 주변 일대는 2000년에 천연기념물 제423호 마라도 천연보호구역으로 지정되어 보호된다고 한다.
